The cone kit comes packaged on a pallet for shipping. The kit comes complete with all the bolts, sheets, legs, bottom pivot gate, and instructions you need to assemble the cone.
All the pieces are precut to size, punched and rolled at the factory to make it easy to assemble. The cone sheets are prepunched and need to be bolted together. Prepunching the sheets maintains the cone shape and keeps the dimensions accurate. A bolt together cone assembly makes construction much easier. The legs, leg ring, and top bin ring are to be welded together. The pivot gate assembly that has been assembled at the factory will need to be welded to the bottom of the cone. The welding required is basic & fairly easy. Good welding is needed to insure structural integrity of the completed hopper cone.
The grain bin is attached to the top of the cone by a rolled angle iron. One side of the angle iron is vertical going up and the other side of the angle iron is horizontal and going out. The bin sits on the outside of the vertical side of the angle iron so it gives a good seal from moisture. The vertical side is also prepunched where you bolt your bin to the cone. The horizontal side of the angle is turned down slightly and serves as a drip rail to keep water off the hopper cone.
The pivot gate opening is 19”. It has a pivot point on one end and a handle on the other end and it turns on a radius, which slides on nylon bushings. This makes opening and closing under a load easier. The pivot gate is 27” off the ground.
To assure a proper fit of your grain bin, we custom build each cone to fit your individual bin. It is necessary to provide us with accurate circumference measurements of your bin. To do this, measure all the way around your bin, as close to the bottom of the bin as possible, on the inside corrugation of the bin ring. DO NOT MEASURE OVER TOP OF THE DOOR. If you are unable to measure under the door on the bin ring, measure above the door.
Since total weight of hopper cone, grain bin, and the contents of the bin are being supported by the legs of the hopper cone, all the weight is being supported by a relatively small amount of surface area. Therefore, it is necessary to insure you have a proper foundation for your hopper cone. In most cases, the cement pad under a flat bottom bin does not contain sufficient thickness & reinforcement rebar & mesh to adequately carry the load of a hopper cone. This pad should be adequately reinforced with concrete, steel mesh, and rebar. Be sure it is poured on level, firmly packed ground. After the cone is in place, you should secure the cone with anchor bolts to the concrete foundation.
Another option to a cement foundation is a steel base. The base (2 ring) may be placed on your old grain bin cement pad OR the base (3 ring) may be placed on firmly packed gravel. You may move your smaller hopper cone bins from one location to another as long as they are empty. We recommend that you do not move bins that are 21 ft. or larger.
The standard hopper cones have a 35 degree cone slope. We do offer, on request, different angles for your cones from 22 degree to 60 degree.
Other options available are: ladder extensions, LevALERT bin level indicator, single and double auger boots, roof and wall vents, bin wall stiffeners, rack & pinion sliding gates, sprocket & chain sliding gates, lever action pivot gates, and aeration units for the hopper cones.
